The electronic health record

Your electronic health record gives you an overview of your health information.

In the electronic health record, you can securely store and manage your health data, such as doctor’s letters, medication plans and results, in one place and also share it with your doctors.

At the start of 2025, every person in Germany with statutory health insurance will automatically be given an electronic health record (in German the "ePa für alle"). This started being introduced in stages back in 2021, with functionalities and groups of users gradually being added.

You can already use the electronic health record on your smartphone via the SBK electronic health record app. This means that you can carry your health data with you anytime and anywhere and also be assured that the doctors treating you are always up to date.

Your data is protected with the highest protection level, and you alone decide with whom you share your data. You can grant permission for which doctor’s practice is allowed to look at which data on an individual basis.

How to get an electronic health record:

We set out your electronic health record as part of the SBK electronic health record app. This is available to you now and can already be used by you before it is officially introduced for all insurants at the start of 2025. Please note: the app is only available in German right now.

The electronic health record is a particularly protected platform for your sensitive data. That is why a multi-stage registration process is very important.

Register and identify: Create an SBK Account now. You can find more information here.
Activate: You can now activate your electronic health record and securely save your health data.

Our tip: Once you have successfully created the SBK electronic health record, you will receive your personal PIN for your SBK electronic health record by post. This will give you access to other digital applications.

In the coming years, the electronic health record will be continuously developed, improved and enhanced with new functions for you.

Good to know: You can already start saving and managing medical documents in the electronic health record. Doctors’ practices and pharmacies are currently being linked to it. Please discuss with your doctor when you are able to set up these documents and health passports in your electronic health record.

: The “electronic health record for everyone” is part of the Ministry of Health’s digitisation strategy. The propagation of digital records is aimed at helping to ensure a high-quality care system and to enable all those involved in healthcare to communicate easil with each other. At the start of 2025, every person in Germany with statutory health insurance will be given an electronic health record from birth. Those who don't want an electronic health record can object to it in good time. We will, of course, inform you about this again beforehand.

: You can terminate the electronic health record at any time. Incidentally: If you withdraw your consent to data processing, your data is erased immediately. In this case, there is no notice period. Please save your data beforehand, otherwise it will be irrevocably erased.

: Your sensitive data that requires protection is encrypted with the highest protection level currently provided in Germany. Your data is saved using a content encryption device on servers located in Germany and Austria, and thus comes under European data protection law. Only you can read the data, as you are the only person who has the key to it. Neither we nor our IT service provides are able to view your data. Our IT service providers are Bitmarck GmbH in Germany and RISE GmbH (Research Industrial Systems Engineering) in Austria.
